Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday participate in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.
ㅤThe October 26, 1881 gunfight in Tombstone, Arizona, was a brief but deadly clash between local lawmen, brothers Virgil, Wyatt, and Morgan Earp, alongside Doc Holliday, and a group of outlaws known as the Cochise County Cowboys. Sparked by Marshal Virgil Earp’s attempt to enforce a town ordinance against carrying weapons, the thirty-second shootout actually occurred in a narrow lot near C.S. Fly’s photography studio rather than the O.K. Corral itself. The intense firefight left three Cowboys dead and three lawmen wounded, leading to murder charges against the Earps and Holliday, though a judge ultimately ruled their actions lawful.
ㅤThe violence continued in the following months as the Cowboys sought revenge, maiming Virgil and assassinating Morgan in targeted ambush attacks. In response, Wyatt Earp launched a personal vendetta against the outlaws while evading pursuit from the local county sheriff. Although the conflict was only a localized feud at the time, it evolved into an enduring archetype of the American Old West after the 1931 publication of Stuart Lake’s biography on Wyatt Earp, which subsequently inspired numerous iconic Western films and cemented the shootout’s legendary status in popular culture.
