Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre: Seven people, six of them gangster rivals of Al Capone’s gang, are murdered in Chicago.
ㅤThe Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre was the brutal killing of seven members and associates of Chicago’s North Side Gang on February 14, 1929. The victims were assembled in a Lincoln Park garage and then gunned down by four unknown assailants, two of whom were disguised as police officers. This shocking event remains one of the most infamous gangland slayings in American history.
ㅤThe massacre stemmed from a fierce rivalry during Prohibition between George “Bugs” Moran’s North Side Gang and Al Capone’s Chicago Outfit, both vying for control of the city’s lucrative organized crime rackets. While the perpetrators have never been officially identified, suspicion heavily fell on members of the Egan’s Rats gang, who were known to be working for Capone. Some theories also suggest involvement from corrupt members of the Chicago Police Department seeking retribution for the death of a fellow officer’s son.
